Description of Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha Lipoic acid is an essential enzyme cofactor. It is found in the mitochondria which are the energy producing structures in each of our cells. Lipoic Acid is essential in the production of energy because of its role in the Krebs cycle. Also, in the body it is converted to dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), which functions as a powerful antioxidant. Alpha Lipoic Acid is known as the Universal Antioxidant because it functions in both water and fat soluble systems in the body.

Standard Alpha Lipoic Acid consists of two mirror image forms of one another (mix of S form and R form). There are some claims that the pure R form is more active than the RS form but these claims are very questionable. Also, the pure R form is many times more expensive than the RS form so the standard RS form (simply referred to as Alpha Lipoic Acid) is the best value for sure.
